This month for Working In the Arts we spoke with Philip Smith who is the Associate Director of Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers in London.

So, where do you work ?

Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers in London.

What is your job title?

Associate Director, Specialist and Head of Modern & Contemporary Art & Design, London and South of England

What time did you wake up? What are you usual working hours?

The usual working hours are 8.30-5.30 Monday to Friday, but there are also events and private views I have to attend on evenings and weekends

What are your key tasks?

To source Modern & Contemporary Art & Design for specialist sales in London and Edinburgh, both nationally and internationally. To curate and Head up Modern Art Sales in London and Business Development for Lyon and Turnbull.

What was your career path to this role?

Post Graduate Degree at the Courtauld Institute then 10 years experience at another leading UK auctioneers.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Best: The travel and meeting fascinating people, and never knowing what the day is going to bring.

Worst: The hectic lifestyle, and never having enough time to visit all the exhibitions and private views that you would like to.

What career advice would you give to your 18 year old self with the benefit of hindsight?

Say yes to all the opportunities presented to you, and do not take to heart any of the knock backs that come your way in the arts industry.

Have you had a secret job that is not on your CV?

Not that I can think of.
