Job description:

Our client is looking to hire an experienced full-time Archivist. This individual should have a background in library science and archival work, preferably with a focus in 20th century American art. It is essential that this individual is self-motivated, highly organized, curious, and detail oriented. This position requires independent work.

Location:

In-person at the gallery, Tuesday through Saturday, 10AM – 6PM, with the possibility of additional hours during peak periods.

Duties:

Archive Management

  • Management and ongoing preservation of 30+ year physical and digital archive, ensuring that all materials and files are properly stored and easily accessible
  • Creating and maintaining digital files using meticulous attention to detail and quality control while ensuring proper metadata has been captured for images
  • Management of in-house and offsite physical archive; ensuring files are accurately catalogued and organized in accordance with best practices and industry standards. Provide research support by retrieving material from archive as needed
  • Consulting and implementing best practices for preservation and housing of materials

Project Support:

  • Project management on all external digitization projects and long-term archival Following through on all goals/objectives while communicating findings and progress to colleagues
  • Recording, writing/tracking captions and credit lines
  • Transcribing video and audio materials ensuring precision and accuracy
  • Implement and maintain a Digital Asset Management system; all files must be properly tagged, categorized and stored for ongoing long-term use
  • Support research projects and exhibitions by providing context and insight into artists and the history of their work

 

Person Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher library science or archival MA in Library Science preferred
  • 3-5 year’s applicable experience preferably in a fine art gallery, museum, or in an image-based archival setting
  • Familiarity with artists estates and archives; love of art and objects with a passion for art history and the context surrounding artistic creation
  • Thorough knowledge of archival, digitization and preservation best practices and industry standards
  • Highly skilled at scanning photographs, transparencies, and slides in a fine art professional environment
  • Physical ability to perform job duties which may include but not limited to lifting boxes of archival materials, climbing stairs, ability to sit for long periods of time, comfortability working with sensitive and aged materials and pulling/filing archives from our offsite storage facility
  • Experience with a Digital Asset Management system
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment working both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented setting
  • Working expertise of Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Creative Suite specifically Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat
  • Prior experience using Epson scanners preferred
