Art Handler, International Gallery

Our client, an internationally renowned gallery in Berlin, is looking for a Chief Art Handler to join their busy team. The role’s core responsibilities are split between planning and preparation of complex artwork installations, and installing artworks and overseeing a team of Art Handlers and service providers. This includes the control of material stocks, the preparation and follow-up of transportations including packaging, and the preparation of condition reports and other artwork documentation.

Tasks:

Artwork check

• Planning and executing all condition checks for outgoing and incoming deliveries including loans, consignments, sold works, art fair transports
• Feedback on condition checks in teams channel
• Careful packaging of artworks of all media

Condition report

• Preparation of protocols for condition reporting
• Preparation of condition reports

Database

• Update of the database with condition reports and protocols
• Maintain packaging information in the Artlogic database using standardised procedures
• Support the Cataloguer by providing missing data (photography, dimensions or material information)
• Calendar and deadline management

Installation

• Installation of artworks for exhibitions, at international art fairs and for clients
• Planning of installations
• Planning the art handling team schedule and the service providers’ schedule
• Preparation for installations, including packing material and tools according to the installation plan, ensuring that the process is as effective as possible

Team responsibilities

• Managing art handlers’ work schedules and availability
• Allocating art handlers’ tasks
• Providing assistance to the various gallery departments (Registrar Team, Admin Team, Sales Team, Artist Liaison Team)
• Responsible for ordering packing materials and tools
• Sourcing hire equipment for installations and exhibitions
• Responsible for keeping a proper order in the inventory of tools and equipment in the gallery and for art fairs
