Job description:

A leading international gallery is seeking a self-starter with a communicative mindset to join the team as an Assistant Director. Working out of their San Francisco Headquarters, this person will be responsible for acting as the primary liaison between artist studios and the gallery team, tracking their activities and setting strategic goals for career growth and sales. This person will also be responsible for achieving a sales goal and developing a collector base.

Position Responsibilities:

Artist Management

  • Assume studio and market management for a minimum of five contemporary gallery artists
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with these artists, including open regular communication about their work, activities, exhibitions and gallery initiatives. Conduct regular studio visits and track artist activities in gallery database
  • Oversee strategic initiatives for these artists, working closely with Owner to set and track goals
  • Work closely with Owner and Directors to set the gallery’s program, including exhibitions and art fairs, and work with artists and colleagues to realise these productions
  • Bring in new works from studio, working closely with the gallery team to bring works to market thoughtfully and efficiently (photography, framing, pricing, written statements, sales dossiers, and marketing efforts)
  • Track sales progress for artists and report quarterly
  • Occasionally oversee production of gallery publications

Sales

  • Develop a strong sales presence and relationship bridge to collectors, institutions, and major influencers
  • Participate actively in the local and global arts ecosystem, attending events and broadening the gallery’s network
  • Manage front desk presence at the gallery

Skills/Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or comparable certification
  • Demonstrated ability to work with mid-career/established artists from the studio all the way to the market
  • Minimum of several years of equivalent experience
  • Track record of selling a minimum of $500,000 annually
  • Existing network of collectors desirable, but not required
  • Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written
  • Ability to travel for gallery exhibitions, art fairs, and artist events and attend events outside of gallery hours
  • A strong work ethic and desire to learn and grow within a small, productive team
  • Excellent time management skills within a fast-paced environment
  • Ability and desire to be a problem-solver, think on their feet and develop creative solutions to new challenges
  • Additional language skills, especially Spanish, are desirable but not required
  • Familiarity with and/or ability to learn and adapt to new software programs (including Salesforce, Squarespace, Google Suite and more)
