Job description:

An established Auction House is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Picture Cataloguer to join the Modern and Contemporary Picture department for a period of 12 months Maternity leave cover. This role will be based in the Home Counties saleroom and will require a number of years’ experience in cataloguing in an auction environment. As a Picture Cataloguer you will ensure seamless co- ordination across departments, cataloguing, provenance research, and client communications.

Key responsibilities: 

Cataloguing:

  • Catalogue Modern and Contemporary pictures for upcoming sales, ensuring all details are precise and in line with auction standards.
  • Catalogue Pictures for the Art & Interiors.
  • Collaborate with the Old Master department as required.

Coordination & Communication:

  • Liaise effectively with other departments, to meet cataloguing deadlines and ensure smooth workflow.

Provenance Research & Catalogue Notes:

  • Undertake provenance research to verify the history of artworks and ensure accurate details are included in the catalogues.
  • Write detailed and engaging catalogue notes predominantly for Modern and Contemporary pictures, reflecting expertise and providing valuable information for prospective clients.

Client Interaction & Viewings:

  • Assist with client viewings of auction lots , providing professional guidance and support.
  • Ensure the proper handling and presentation of works during viewings and advise clients on specific lots where required.

Condition Reports:

  • Compile detailed and accurate condition reports.
  • Discuss findings with prospective clients and offer expert advice on the condition of the works.

Sales Support & Recommendations:

  • Contact potential buyers to recommend artworks and ensure that all client interactions are handled with professionalism and care.

Collaboration:

  • Ensure that the department activities align with the companies overall auction schedule and standards.

Skills & Experience required:

  • Graduate in Art History, Fine Arts or related/
  • Proven experience in art auction houses, galleries, or museums, with a particular focus on Modern and Contemporary.
  • In-depth knowledge of Modern and Contemporary art, including its historical context, market trends, and key artists.
  • A number of years experience in cataloguing artworks and writing catalogue.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, and external partners.
  • A keen eye for detail, with the ability to compile thorough condition reports and conduct provenance research.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast- paced environment.
  • A proactive and professional approach to client interaction and customer interaction.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to travel with some overnight stays.
  • Full clean driving licence desirable.

Desirable Attributes:

  • A background in Art History or a related subject.
  • Familiarity with auction software and cataloguing.
  • Previous experience in Modern/Contemporary art.
  • A passion for the arts and a deep understanding of the fine art.
