Job description:

A highly respected contemporary gallery in London is looking for a Communications Assistant to join their busy team.

The Communications Assistant will provide administrative support to the Director of Communications in London and to the global department as a whole including maintaining press archives and delivering PR campaigns as part of a team. The role requires a meticulous and organised approach, exemplary writing, proofreading and copy editing skills and a keen eye for detail as well as interest and experience in arts PR. The role involves preparing marketing materials for art fairs and exhibitions using InDesign and Mailchimp. Basic German language skills are essential. Experience managing interns is desired.

Main tasks include, but are not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Assist and support the Director of Communications in London
  • Provide administrative support to the department on a global level
  • Coordinate and support the production and design of art fair books
  • Deliver exhibition PR campaigns in-house, in consultation with senior team members
  • Monitor press coverage and request corrections where appropriate
  • Oversee the global press cuttings archive
  • Source and log all press coverage
  • Maintain the global press contacts database
  • Manage and mentor the Communications Intern
  • Respond to/redirect all incoming press enquiries for images/artists/gallery profiles for European publications
  • Prepare press images, captions and information for external PR
  • Design and format press releases and sales packs using InDesign
  • Assist at press events in London
  • Co-ordination of art fair books supported at a senior level
  • Collation of all images, arranging photography with the registrar and fair director, and clearing copyright of images where required
  • Copy editing texts
  • Liaising with the designers regarding production to meet deadlines
  • Proofreading and liaison on distribution

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Experience in a commercial gallery, art institution press office or PR agency
  • Educated to degree level (BA required) and knowledge of contemporary and modern art history
  • Meticulous eye for detail and exemplary organisational skills
  • Excellent written skills, knowledge of editorial processes and PR campaigns
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent skills in Adobe CS5, particularly Photoshop and InDesign (essential), working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mac OSX
  • Language skills: English and basic German (essential), other languages desirable
  • Management experience desirable
