Job description:

Our client is a regional auction house with a London presence, and they are seeking a Head of Watches to join their team for a competitive salary. The successful candidate will have substantial auction house experience, and will be able to provide strategic leadership, marketing insight and a comprehensive network within the watch collecting community.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Develop and execute the strategic vision for the Watch department
  • Lead and inspire a team of specialists, ensuring professional growth and high performance
  • Set and achieve departmental goals, including sales targets and market positioning

Expert Valuation and Curation

  • Conduct detailed assessments and valuations of high-value and rare watches for auction, in both a walk-in and online capacity, with a view to consign items to auction
  • Attending external appointments for off-site valuations and events, including probate valuations
  • Curate, catalogue, and manage auction lots, ensuring accurate descriptions and historical context
  • Oversee the authentication and condition reporting of watches

Marketing and Business Development

  • Develop and maintain relationships with high-profile clients, collectors, and industry professionals
  • Work closely with the Business Development team to identify and cultivate new business, identifying and capitalising on emerging opportunities in the market
  • Collaborate with marketing and PR teams to promote auctions and significant lots
  • Represent the company at industry events, exhibitions, and networking functions

Operational Management

  • Ensure smooth operation of pre-auction exhibitions and events, working closely with team members to ensure the auction deadlines are met
  • Manage departmental budgets and financial performance
  • Implement best practices and innovative approaches to enhance efficiency and client satisfaction
  • Assist with viewing and sale days, including telephone bidding if needed

Requirements:

  • Substantial experience in a Watch Specialist role within an Auction House
  • Extensive knowledge of both modern, vintage and antique watches, including brands, models, and market values
  • Strong network of contacts within the watch collecting community and industry
  • Proven track record of successful valuations and sales of high-value items
  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical abilities
  • Ability to travel internationally as required
  • Enthusiasm for attending networking events
  • Excellent attention to detail is essential
  • Strong IT proficiency
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise a busy workload in order to meet deadlines is essential
  • Ability to work under pressure and on your own initiative is essential
