We are seeking an enthusiastic Jewellery cataloguer / Valuer to join the experienced team at one of ther UKs leading independent Auction Houses. The Role
This is a varied and rewarding position offering involvement in every stage of the auction process.
Working closely with our Head of Department and specialist team, you will be responsible for researching, valuing, cataloguing and preparing jewellery for auction while also developing relationships with vendors and assisting with business-winning opportunities.
This role offers genuine career progression, with opportunities to develop into a senior specialist and valuer as your experience grows.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Researching, valuing, and cataloguing jewellery, watches and coins for auction.
- Identifying gemstones, diamonds, pearls and precious metals using specialist testing equipment.
- Knowledge of watches and coins not necessary but preferred.
- Assessing quality, condition, provenance, and current market value.
- Producing engaging, informative and accurate catalogue descriptions.
- Preparing condition reports and responding to client enquiries.
- Maintaining the social media and Instagram accounts
- Advising on auction estimates and reserves.
- Handling valuable items with the highest level of care and security.
- Preparing sales for auction viewings and live auctions.
- Assisting during auction days, including 4 Saturday’s a year.
- Conducting valuation appointments and supporting valuation days.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with private clients, collectors, dealers and executors.
- Keeping up to date with market trends, designer jewellery, gemstones and auction results.
- Working collaboratively across departments to deliver exceptional client service.
About You
We are looking for someone who is passionate about jewellery, enjoys researching beautiful objects and has an excellent eye for detail. You may already work within an auction house, the jewellery trade or valuation industry, or be looking to bring your jewellery expertise into the auction world.
Ideally, you will have:
- Some experience within an auction house, jewellery retailer, pawnbroker, valuation practice or the wider jewellery industry.
- FGA, DGA, Foundation Gem – A, GIA or equivalent gemmological qualifications, or demonstrable industry experience.
- A sound understanding of diamonds, coloured gemstones, precious metals and hallmarks.
- Strong research skills with an interest in jewellery history, designers and makers.
- Excellent written English with the ability to produce concise and engaging catalogue descriptions.
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and database systems.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- A professional, positive and proactive approach.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
- Social media experience
Previous auction house experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
