­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Our client, one of longest established fine art auction houses in the UK, is seeking an enthusiastic junior cataloguer to join their Picture Department. The successful candidate will be assisting the team with a busy schedule of nine sales per annum. The ideal candidate will be pro-active, quick to learn and have an enthusiasm for art and antiques.

Responsibilities:

Work within the department to undertake cataloguing of items consigned for sale, be proactive in researching items to ensure accuracy. Provide condition reports for items consigned that accurately reflect each item’s status, updating information on the database.

  • Catalogue items entered for auction, ensuring compliance with inhouse cataloguing styles
  • Edit items incorrectly catalogued and raise recurring issues with the head of department
  • Research or refer items to specialists where knowledge is limited
  • Provide detailed condition reports for lots catalogued, including additional images to support the sale of items
  • Accurate entry of cataloguing and condition report information into the database, ensure formatting complies with policies

Play an integral role in supporting the department, working with valuation, administrative and marketing teams to ensure the successful presentation of items for sale, including uploading of information and images to the database.

  • Attend team meetings as required, actively participate putting forward ideas and views that enhance department development
  • Support the team with lotting sales and work independently, if necessary, to ensure sales are ready for export onto websites within set timeframes, liaising with the administration team as appropriate
  • Work with the photography team, if required, in the development of ideas for presentation of items for auction
  • Take and upload condition report images to the database, for export onto website

Support the successful operations of the department, liaising with clients where appropriate, responding to queries via telephone and email, consigning items within the offices for appraisal.

  • Respond to telephone and email queries from clients within agreed timescales
  • Liaise with administration teams in relation to client business
  • Refer queries to the relevant department as appropriate
  • Ensure information obtained from clients is in compliance with AML requirements

Show integrity and have a willingness to learn, develop personal knowledge and skills to support the department and personal growth, keeping up to date with commercial fashions, trends, and hammer prices.

  • Take a proactive approach to personal development, keep up to date with recent fashions, trends and hammer prices in relation to job role
  • In consultation with your line manager, identify areas for personal development and take steps to increase knowledge, undertaking research where knowledge is lapse

Adhere to internal policies and procedures.

  • Ensure familiarity and compliance with the staff handbook and comply with all internal policies and procedures, including but not limited to Data Protection and Privacy Policies, Anti-Money Laundering processes
  • Attend events where appropriate and availability allows
  • Provide support for initiatives and have a positive attitude to change and development

Desirable skills

  • A minimum of 1-2 years valuation and cataloguing experience
