Job description:

A contemporary gallery in Shanghai is looking for a Marketing & Communications Manager to promote the gallery, increasing brand visibility and communicating its values across Asia.

Based in Shanghai, the role will provide support to the global team also based in London and New York. The candidate will lead on social media and content creation related to the gallery in Asia, and will be responsible for managing all events for the Shanghai gallery, as well supporting art fairs and external exhibition activities in the region.

The role will report to the Head of Communications, and be responsible for the development and implementation of press campaigns for gallery activity in Shanghai and across Asia, in tandem with the external PR agency.

Social media and content production:

  • Responsible for strategy and implementation of the gallery’s social media accounts in China – WeChat and weibo – including collation of materials from the global team, inputting into global content calendars, and reviewing of output for Chinese & Asian audiences to reflect trends in interest and engagement
  • Assist wider Marketing & Communications team in generating social media content for Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, advising on content related to the Shanghai exhibition programme and the gallery’s Asia activity, such as external exhibitions, art fairs and regional events.
  • Translating text from English to Mandarin / Cantonese – such as press releases, social media content and text for the website
  • Act as point person to coordinate assets for the gallery’s publications – text, translations, images and other materials
  • manage third-party listings on event calendars and local media outlets
  • review and approve content that will be published by gallery partners

Media relations:

  • Support in drafting materials for exhibitions at the gallery
  • Acquire the relevant information for each exhibition and create press links
  • Respond to image and media enquiries relating to Asia activity
  • When needed, pitch to specialist media regarding the Shanghai programme, reporting to the Head of Communications, in coordination with the external PR agency
  • Assist in creating and maintaining database contacts for press and marketing in the Asia region
  • Ensure media are invited to openings and make relevant introductions to gallery staff
  • Oversee interviews in Shanghai with the gallery’s senior team
  • Act as the point person for external institutions where it relates to the gallery’s artists’ activity, such as museum shows and off-site projects
  • Ensure appropriate materials are on the front desk for exhibition openings and during the run of exhibitions, such as press releases, artist biographies, press packs and relevant catalogues
  • Assist with press cuttings for coverage in Asia, where needed
  • Monitor press coverage across Asia and input into the global weekly press round-up
  • Support the team with listings (including images) and pitches to subscription-based outlets


  • Lead on the organisation and delivery of the gallery’s events including private views, dinners, talks and tours. This includes sourcing venues, organising catering and security, issuing invitations, managing guest lists and overseeing check-in and seating
  • Support on further events in the region with the above tasks, including art fairs and collaborative events with local museums or institutions

Experience / key attributes:

  • considerable marketing or communications role in the arts or related creative industry, with commercial gallery or cultural communications agency experience preferred
  • Existing relationships with journalists based in Asia desired
  • Fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English
  • Excellent Chinese writing skills, grasp of editorial style and nuance of translations
  • Comfortable working across a global organization, with locations in multiple time zones
  • Familiarity with systems (Salesforce, Pardot and Smartsheets) or willingness to learn
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent digital capabilities (e.g., social media, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Strong organisational skills
