Job description:

A contemporary gallery in East London is looking for an Operations Manager to join their team.

Responsibilities include:


  • Schedule, implement, and oversee installation of all exhibitions across the two gallery spaces, as well as select external and institutional exhibitions
  • Liaise with artists to ensure everything they need for the installation is provided, including plinths and frames
  • Liaise with Directors to ensure the exhibition is installed to their required standards and timeline
  • Liaise with Registrar to ensure all artworks are delivered safely and on time
  • Liaise with Communications Manager for photography scheduling
  • Hire and manage freelance technicians for installation as needed
  • Oversee installation of artworks in the viewing room and office areas on a rotational basis


  • Oversee the booth plans, installation, deinstallation, rehangs, and logistics (including storage and transport) at art fairs
  • Order walls, lights, electrical outlets, plinths, frames, for booths
  • Where applicable, travel to select international art fairs
  • Liaise with Registrar and assist in organising onward artwork transport for buyers with shippers on site
  • Hire and manage freelance technicians if needed


  • Communicate with artists to understand their technical needs and research suitable fabricators and suppliers
  • Work with external fabricators to produce works which cannot be achieved in artists’ studios
  • Organise framing, plinths, and all other production for exhibitions (at the gallery and select institutional shows) and art fairs, liaising with artists and the Directors to meet required specifications, timelines, and budgets
  • Centralise all exhibition, art fair, and project production costs


  • Work with the Registrar to:
    • Ensure all shipments for exhibitions (at the gallery and select institutional shows) and art fairs are organised in a timely manner
    • Advise on packing/crating requirements depending on the type of shipment
  • Ensure works for clients are packed in a safe and presentable manner, and carry out installation for clients if needed
  • Oversee condition reports before and after shipments when needed


  • Maintain general upkeep across gallery spaces, and hire external contactors if needed
  • Oversee the development of any new or temporary gallery spaces, working with architects, engineers, and tradesman
  • Liaise with the Registrar to ensure storage spaces are organised and in order
  • Liaise with electricians for lighting requirements
  • Liaise with the security company for alarm system requirements
  • Operate the heating system
  • Liaise with landlord when needed


  • Available for full-time role (Monday–Friday and some weekends for art fair travel or special projects)
  • Considerable experience at an art gallery or similar role
  • Strong previous experience as a technician
  • Strong interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, artists, and suppliers
  • Strong teamworking skills
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects at once
