Our client, a contemporary art gallery, is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to join their team on a part-time basis (2 days per week).

Renowned for its innovative exhibition programme, the gallery works with both established and emerging artists, collaborates with institutions and private collectors, and has an active presence at international art fairs. Alongside its exhibitions, the gallery is dedicated to publishing catalogues and artist monographs, while also operating a secondary market division handling significant works of modern, post-war, and contemporary art and photography.

The Role

The Bookkeeper will hold sole responsibility for all aspects of gallery finance up to year-end, including:

  • Managing all day-to-day bookkeeping and reconciliations across multiple accounts, including foreign currency.

  • Preparing quarterly VAT returns, EU sales lists, and ensuring HMRC compliance.

  • Overseeing payroll, pensions, and all associated reporting.

  • Managing creditors and debtors.

  • Producing management accounts, profit and loss statements, and balance sheets.

  • Applying knowledge of multiple VAT schemes

  • Training and advising staff on VAT and import/export rules and procedures.

Candidate Profile

  • Strong experience with Xero (accounts and payroll).

  • Previous gallery or art world finance experience is highly desirable.

  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and confident working independently.
