A gallery in Geneva is looking for a Registrar and Cataloguer to join their team. This key role involves the effective management of various aspects related to image archiving, documentation, exhibition and loan logistics, as well as insurance and shipments. The key responsibilities include:
Collection Management
- Maintain detailed records of the artworks in the gallery’s collection, including acquisition information, provenance, condition reports, and exhibition history. Add all artworks to Artlogic and rename all artworks in the database.
Documentation
- Manage the cataloging, labeling, and documentation of artworks, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information for each piece.
Loans and Exhibitions
- Facilitate artwork loans to other institutions for exhibitions, coordinating transportation, insurance, and handling of the pieces.
Condition Reports
- Conduct regular assessments of the artworks’ condition to monitor changes or damages, and arrange necessary conservation work.
Inventory Control
- Supervise the inventory of artworks, perform regular checks to ensure the location and condition of each piece are accounted for.
Compliance and Regulations
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements and ethical standards regarding the acquisition, loan, and care of artworks.
Collaboration
- Work closely with curators, conservators, exhibition teams to plan and execute exhibitions while managing logistical aspects of handling and installing artworks.
Shipment Coordination
- Organize the transportation of sold artworks.
- Coordinate with art transporters and shipping companies to ensure safe and timely delivery.
- Manage customs documentation and import/export procedures for international shipments.
Packaging and Handling
- Oversee proper packaging and crating of artworks to ensure safe transport.
- Provide detailed handling instructions to ensure the protection of artworks during transport.
Insurance Management
- Arrange insurance coverage for artworks in the gallery’s collection, whether on-site or in transit.
- Work with insurance brokers to assess insurance needs, adjust policies, and file claims if necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of insurance coverage and assessments for each artwork.
This position requires excellent attention to detail, rigorous organization, and a strong knowledge of best practices in art management.
Additionally, the aspect of billing and payment tracking may also be part of the Registrar’s responsibilities, ensuring effective financial management of art transactions.
