Registrar, Established Contemporary Gallery

Our client, an established contemporary gallery, is looking for a Registrar. The ideal candidate must be a detail oriented, self-starter who is trustworthy, takes direction well and practices the highest standards of professionalism and discretion.

Tasks:

• Orchestrate and supervise art handler teams during install and dismantling: ensuring the technical installation of artworks at the gallery exhibitions or punctual showroom viewings, and oversee scenography following the artist’s instructions and Director’s curation of each exhibition / showroom presentation, supervising or with the assistance of your designated art handlers
• Ensuring all technical aspects of the exhibition from painting to lighting, anticipating weight and scale limitations
• Execute condition reports upon arrival of incoming works and log CR on Articheck
• Supervising and archiving external condition reports for high value works on top of internal CR
• Prevent and assess risk: follow-up and maintain up to date information on insurance policies for the gallery space and stock, oversee loans – responsible for all insurance related matters under the supervision of Senior Director, Paris and Business Director, New York
• Execute all duties in a cost-effective manner with an understanding of the given budget
• Optimise and maintain organisation of artwork storage for the Paris Gallery, having a clear understanding of the volume used and available, producing and managing accurate inventory reports, negotiating the best rate per m3
• Post-sale follow-up: ensuring a seamless client experience from consigning until delivery at the clients’ homes/institutions
• Ensure technical installation of artworks the gallery exhibitions or punctual showroom viewings, supervising or with the assistance of your designated art handlers. Ensuring all technical aspects of the exhibition from painting to lighting, anticipating weight and scale limitations
• Maintaining and thinking ahead to ensure the security standards towards public, staff and artworks present at the gallery
• Ensuring the required conservation measures for the works stored, in transit or on view at the gallery/showroom
• “Livre de Police”: Recording promptly and in chronological order every object entering and leaving the gallery
• Record, follow-up and chase due payments in relation to associated exhibition costs
• Manage local shipping and technical requirements of Paris + Art Basel in coordination with London and NY registrars
• Be open to travelling and organizing shipments involving off-site viewings and other related projects

Additional duties:

• Should be able to assist if needed with art handling responsibilities at the Paris gallery
• Main point of contact for all IT related questions with our IT provider
• Open to travelling and organising shipments involving off-site viewings or other related projects

Requirements:

• Previous experience as a registrar or shipping coordinator in the art market
• Extensive knowledge of fine art shipping and transport, VAT and import fees, as well as local and international customs laws
• Must be able to maintain good relations with vendors
• Fluent in English and French
• Confident user of Pack Office, ArtBase, ArtLogic
