Our client, a contemporary art gallery in Berlin, is seeking a Sales Director to join their busy team. The position reports to the Gallery Owner and the ideal candidate will have several years’ experience. The Sales Director will be responsible for developing the sales strategy, managing Artist Liaisons, Exhibitions as well as all Art Fairs. Superior and multi-lingual communication skills (including fluency in German), as well as the ability to time-manage and meet deadlines, is essential.


Sales and Accounting

  • Develop, lead and coordinate sales for the gallery which includes, but is not limited to: Viewing Rooms, featured work, art fairs and exhibitions
  • Keep track of inventory, timing, and budget of the gallery
  • Develop sales goals in partnership with gallery team
  • Partner with Digital Marketing team to calendarize, create and promote online sales
  • Partner with Marketing team to identify and execute opportunities to gain access to new inventory, emails and offline clients
  • Maintain relationships with potential buyers
  • Create the sales strategy for primary market artworks available for offer and for all exhibitions
  • Manage digital analytics and sales reports for each initiative

Communication and Artist Liaison

  • Oversee / approve all related content before it goes live (content, images, prices, layout, emails, etc.)
  • Manage the gallery’s relationship with the artists and their studios
  • Manage artist-related matters, including but not limited to: internal and external exhibitions, publications, press, research, logistics
  • Be responsible for artist-related archives (documents and publications) and special projects such as cataloguing
  • Ensure all information in databases and on the website is up-to-date and accurate
  • Facilitate production; establish and monitor production budget and timeline
  • Establish system for monitoring commissions and consignments/loans
  • Prepare materials and documents for offers, exhibition checklists, and viewings


  • Be responsible for handing final collection to Digital Marketing team to upload and promote accordingly
  • Coordinate updates to inventory status with Sales team and Digital Marketing team
  • Place artworks with clients, collectors and museums
  • Organise shows, exhibitions, art fairs, etc.
  • Arrange international and domestic shipments of artworks for exhibitions, inventory, art fairs, and clients
  • Material management of works of art (preparation for transport, delivery, installation, presentation, packaging, storage of stocks, etc.), customs, tax regulations and documents required for international shipments
  • Update artwork locations and applicable information in gallery database and maintain inventory
  • Oversee art handler, registrar, shipping, and accounting functions


  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an art-related field
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in an art gallery
  • Established and international private client network
  • Professional relationships with international, public and corporate institutions
  • Proven track record in art sales
  • Intrinsic knowledge of international art markets
  • Experience in sourcing outside funding for artist projects
  • Proficiency in accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting, etc.)
  • Legal knowledge of consignments and loans agreements
  • Excellent command of verbal and written English; additional language skills would be a plus
  • Must possess a professional, positive work demeanour and the ability to work independently and effectively with vendors, clients, etc., displaying a pioneering spirit
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to take initiative and build strong, productive relationships
