Job description:

Seeking a senior salesperson with a deep knowledge of photography and the photography market, to join a photography gallery in London, full time. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience in sales, preferably in a gallery or auction house environment, a strong knowledge of and network in the photography market and a vested interest in Japanese Photography and the Japanese Arts. The candidate will have excellent IT skills and extensive knowledge of Art Logic database and Art Logic website management.

Role description:

Sales:

  • Meeting revenue and margin targets in a timely manner
  • Managing and broadening the gallery’s client base
  • Researching and developing new clients
  • Working with artists to keep gallery inventory stable
  • Administration of sales with the gallery’s proprietary database, Art Logic
  • Attendance at and participation in gallery openings, art fairs, and special events
  • Travel to special events, including exhibition openings of gallery artists, both within and outside the UK
  • Helping to develop and refine focused analysis, research, and business strategies for existing and new markets—including but not limited to art fairs, clients, commissions, and exhibitions—which are key to the gallery’s ongoing and growing profitability
  • Drive primary and secondary sales from start to finish
  • Work with galleries to lend/consign works for exhibition or sale
  • Regularly liaise with the gallery team to create sales packs, provenance, texts, images for artwork offers.
  • Sales administration, including co-ordinating invoicing, being fully aware of General Data Protection and Anti-Money Laundering regulations, framing, managing shipping quotes and requests, after sales care
  • Cultivating relationships with artists, including studio visits, both on our current roster and those not directly assigned to the gallery
  • Work on each exhibition to offer works to a rostrum of known and new clients
  • Writing press release for e-newsletter and website, invite the guests and prompt visits to the physical space of the gallery

Artist and Estate Management:

  • Devise and implement strategies to support, grow and develop delegated artists’ / estates careers
  • Maintain the edition charts / stock for allocated artists and estates
  • Order prints for stock or sale for allocated artists and estates, from the relevant print studio and/or head of the estate
  • Regular meetings and studio visits with the artists / estate representatives
  • Arrange and oversee commissions of managed artists with the Accounts department
  • Feed potential content / stories to the Digital Content spreadsheet/calendar

Essential Skills / attributes include:

  • BA in Art History, Photography, or (other) Arts-related subject
  • Considerable experience in fine art sales
  • Excellent knowledge of photography and the international contemporary and vintage photography markets
  • Financially astute, with an understanding of the gallery’s commercial needs
  • Fluency in a foreign language other than English is highly desirable but not mandatory
  • Excellent IT skills, especially with Art Logic
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to negotiate effectively and diplomatically
  • Strategic and analytical thinking
