We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable Saleroom Manager to join a small, dedicated team at a dynamic and well-established regional auction house in Edinburgh. This is a key leadership role, offering the opportunity to be part of a business known for its diverse, high-quality sales and excellent client service.
As Saleroom Manager, you will oversee and manage the efficient day-to-day running of the saleroom, coordinating a busy calendar of auctions. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring smooth operations, from logistics and staffing to presentation and client experience.
This auction house holds:
- Bi-monthly Antiques and Works of Art Sales: Featuring over 500 lots including antique furniture, gold, silver, jewellery, clocks and watches, Oriental and Asian art, and fine paintings.
- Bi-monthly Collectors’ Sales: Showcasing coins, banknotes, medals, militaria, toys, model railways, stamps, ephemera, tribal art, and whisky, wine and spirits.
- Fortnightly Home Furnishings & Interiors Sales: With 600–800 lots ranging from ceramics, books, vintage items, furniture, rugs, to decorative collectables.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all saleroom operations and ensure sales run efficiently and on schedule
- Manage and coordinate the saleroom team, porters and support staff
- Ensure high standards of presentation and client service before, during and after auctions
- Work closely with valuers, cataloguers, and admin staff to support auction planning and logistics
- Liaise with clients and buyers, providing assistance and guidance during viewings and sales
- Maintain a safe, organised and welcoming environment in the saleroom
Required skills and experiences:
- Proven experience in a similar role within an auction house, antiques business or related environment
- Strong organisational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Leadership experience with the ability to motivate and coordinate a small team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially in client-facing situations
- Sound knowledge of auction procedures, lot handling, and logistics
- A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to get involved with setup and breakdown
- Competency in using auction management systems or related software
- A keen interest in antiques, art, or collectables is highly desirable
