Job description:

A contemporary Pop artist’s studio in East London is looking for a commercially minded Studio Manager to work alongside the artist in leveraging business/exhibition opportunities and overseeing the smooth running of a busy studio practice.

In addition to reviewing and assessing the viability of all incoming opportunities, the Studio Manager will take a lead role in managing studio output and ensuring the activities of a talented team of design, logistics and production staff are effectively aligned to successfully execute a busy schedule of projects to a high standard.

Gallery relations and commercial development

  • Act as first point of contact for all incoming enquiries to assess suitability and foster relationships for long term development
  • Negotiate terms of consignment, exhibition, and collaboration agreement
  • Agree selection of works for consignment and sales opportunities, charity auctions, and gifting
  • Work with the artist to set and monitor pricing
  • Monitor listings on public websites such as Artnet
  • Providing accountant with information on sales to raise invoices, and monitor payment status on client invoices

Line management of the studio Registrar

  • Review and approve shipping and storage quotes
  • Ensure consignment dates are adhered to
  • Ensure proper customs documentation is held for all imports/exports
  • Review quarterly artwork movement reports to insurers
  • Review monthly download of current artwork stock costs and artwork statuses, processing analysis of production costs with accountant

Line management of Fabrication Coordinator and Painting Production manager

  • Review and approve quotes for the fabrication of sculptures, merchandise, editions, and special painting material needs
  • Communicate deadlines where production projects need to align with installation schedules, regularly reviewing priorities
  • Assist in quality checking artworks
  • Ensuring production costs are reported and processed accurately

Line management of Exhibitions and Projects Coordinator

  • Strategise project timelines and reviewing project schedule on an ongoing basis
  • Agree and monitor budgets
  • Ensure deadlines, budgetary restraints, and agreed deliverables are communicated to relevant studio staff and responsibilities are understood by all
  • Review and approve marketing and promotional materials
  • Review and approve dedicated project costs

General studio upkeep

  • Ensure studio is stocked with communal goods and office supplies
  • Act as primary studio liaison with external IT support
  • Process payments – production and project invoices, utilities

Experience and skills

  • Proven experience managing a team
  • Proven experience building and fostering commercial relationships, preferably in the art world. An existing professional network would be a bonus
  • Experience communicating in the visual arts language and some knowledge of material and process
  • Experience managing budgets
  • A diplomatic and sensitive approach to negotiations
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise and handle multiple projects with agility
  • Some knowledge of the metaverse and NFT projects beneficial
