Job description:
A busy artist studio is looking for a Technical Manager. A highly accomplished Art Technician with significant experience, they will manage a group up to 15 technicians, and work closely with the Technical Coordinator to oversee tasks. They will have a good understanding of all processes used in the industry, be accomplished in managing art installations, have an understanding of packing artworks, and be able to head up the technical side of short and long term exhibition planning.
Key areas of Responsibility:
- Planning the installations of all projects run by the London Technical team, providing tool lists, RAMS, and Plant needed for all exhibition UK/and overseas
- Conduct site visits prior to installations, and ensure that the team are capable of installing artworks within clients’ residences, and galleries
- Managing the day to day running of the team with Technical Coordinator
- Making sure all technical teams are working to deadlines set
- Manage a team of 15 technicians, all with varying levels of skills
- Responsible for installations within clients’ homes, gallery spaces, and internal viewing rooms
- Able to work well under pressure, and be able to prioritise tasks
- Have a good eye to detail, and ensure that artworks are handled and installed in a professional manner
- Commercial thinking across all aspects of the role
- The ability to problem solve and see a job through from beginning to end
- Making sure all artworks are packed correctly
- Monitoring the movements internal and externally within the studio and updating all records as and when needed
- Attending site visits for all installations, produce site reports and plan installation and RAMS for VIPs on regular basis
- Produce weekly progress reports on all projects
- Being accountable for holding meetings with the technicians in your team
- Managing the handling processes with in the technical team
- Organising all training internally and externally for the technical team
Required Skills and Experience:
- Have significant of experience as an art technician.
- Have experience of direct line management of a team
- Be able to work as part of a team
- Have the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
- Comfortable with travelling abroad sometimes at short notice
- Be a good communicator, with both superiors and those within the team
- Hold yourself in a professional manner, internally as well as externally
