We are looking for a passionate, personable and commercially driven Art Consultant to join the team of a gallery in White City, London.
As an Art Consultant, you’ll be at the heart of the client experience, helping people discover artwork they genuinely love and building long-term relationships with collectors. You’ll combine your passion for art with a consultative approach to sales, using your knowledge, personality and creativity to help clients build their own personal art collections.
From welcoming visitors into the gallery to private appointments, telephone consultations and home approvals, you’ll provide a highly personalised service tailored to each client’s tastes, lifestyle and aspirations.
This is a target-driven role with excellent earning potential, where your success is directly rewarded through commission. You’ll have the opportunity to build your own client portfolio, develop lasting relationships and become a trusted art adviser to your collectors.
What you’ll be doing
Build relationships and deliver exceptional client experiences
- Welcome every client warmly and create an engaging, memorable gallery experience.
- Build genuine one-to-one relationships with clients, taking the time to understand their tastes, interests and aspirations.
- Provide knowledgeable, personalised advice to help clients discover artwork that is right for them.
- Conduct consultations in the gallery, over the phone and through private appointments.
- Develop relationships that extend beyond a single purchase, helping clients build and evolve their personal art collections.
- Provide excellent aftercare and maintain regular, relevant contact with your clients.
Drive sales and achieve your targets
- Work towards and consistently achieve your individual monthly sales targets.
- Inspire clients through your passion, knowledge and enthusiasm for the artwork.
- Confidently present original paintings, limited editions, sculptures and other collectable pieces.
- Identify opportunities to introduce clients to new artists and artwork.
- Develop add-on and upgrade opportunities by demonstrating the value and benefits of different pieces.
- Use creative and engaging communication, including personalised emails and invitations, to generate private consultations and sales opportunities.
- Confidently close sales while ensuring the client experience remains at the heart of every interaction.
Become an expert in art
- Build an in-depth knowledge of the artists represented by the gallery and the artwork available.
- Regularly research artists, their stories and their work so you can bring personality and insight to your conversations with clients.
- Keep up to date with relevant developments and trends within the art market.
- Share your knowledge and passion in a way that inspires clients and builds confidence in their purchasing decisions.
Develop your own client portfolio
- Make full use of the gallery’s CRM to identify new opportunities and re-engage existing clients.
- Build relationships with clients who may not have purchased previously and inspire them to visit the gallery or explore the collection.
- Maintain regular contact across the full client base rather than focusing solely on established collectors.
- Develop clients from their first interaction into regular purchasers and, ultimately, loyal collectors.
- Follow up new leads promptly and professionally.
- Encourage referrals and use your existing relationships to introduce new clients to the gallery.
- Conduct home and office approvals, providing a truly personal buying experience and helping clients visualise artwork within their own environment.
Gallery life
As part of the gallery team, you’ll play an important role in creating an inspiring environment for clients.
You’ll help to:
- Keep the gallery looking polished, welcoming and commercially effective.
- Ensure artwork is presented beautifully, with appropriate pricing, biographies and lighting.
- Support gallery rehangs and artist events.
- Help create engaging window displays that attract attention and encourage new visitors.
- Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and presentation across the gallery.
- Support the team with deliveries, stock movements and the safe handling and presentation of artwork.
- Keep the stock room organised and ensure artwork is correctly stored and labelled.
Events and client experiences
Events are an important part of building relationships with collectors, and you’ll play an active role in making them successful.
You’ll help to:
- Build guest lists through your client relationships and CRM.
- Personally invite clients and generate excitement around upcoming events and artists.
- Support gallery rehangs ahead of events.
- Create opportunities for clients to preview and purchase artwork.
- Attend and support evening events when required.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who combines passion, personality and commercial drive.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience in sales, luxury retail, premium customer service or another relationship-led environment.
- A proven ability to build strong, lasting relationships with clients.
- Confidence communicating face to face, over the phone and in writing.
- A natural ability to engage, influence and inspire people.
- A genuine passion for art and a desire to develop your knowledge.
- A commercially minded approach and a strong desire to achieve targets.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisation and attention to detail.
- The confidence to work independently while contributing positively to a team.
- The flexibility to work occasional evenings for gallery events.
- The resilience, energy and ambition to thrive in a target-driven environment.
Previous experience in the art industry is beneficial, but a passion for art, a strong sales instinct and the right personality are just as important.
The person
You’ll be naturally curious about people and genuinely interested in what makes them tick. You’ll enjoy discovering what a client loves, understanding their world and matching them with artwork that means something to them.
You’ll be:
- Passionate – genuinely excited by art and able to share that enthusiasm with clients.
- Personable – warm, confident and comfortable building relationships with all kinds of people.
- Commercial – motivated by targets and confident turning opportunities into sales.
- Consultative – focused on understanding the client rather than simply selling a product.
- Ambitious – motivated to develop your career, your knowledge and your earnings.
- Adaptable – comfortable responding to changing priorities and different client needs.
- A team player – supportive, positive and committed to achieving success together.
- Customer-focused – always looking for ways to exceed expectations and create an exceptional experience.
