Job description:

An established and internationally operating gallery is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the role of Art Director for their international expansion, to be based in Hong Kong office.

Responsibilities include:

  • Source and negotiate artists worldwide and ensuring artworks are suitable for local art market and terms are favourable and protect the gallery’s interests.
  • Foster relationships with artists, collectors, and other galleries to enhance the gallery’s reputation, expand its network, and secure new and exciting exhibitions.
  • Curate and organise art exhibitions, including selecting artworks, planning the layout, and coordinating installation to ensure a cohesive and engaging visitor experience.
  • Develop and manage each exhibitions budget, including forecasting revenue, controlling expenses, and securing the profitability of each exhibition.
  • Oversee the marketing and promotion of the gallery and its exhibitions, including advertising, public relations, and social media outreach to maximize attendance and engagement.
  • Lead and manage gallery staff to ensure a knowledgeable and motivated team.
  • Conduct research and publish scholarly articles, catalogue essays, or exhibition reviews to contribute to the academic discourse in the art community and elevate the gallery’s intellectual standing worldwide.

Requirements:

  • BA in Art History and/or Arts Administration, and considerable similar experience, specifically within an international blue-chip gallery setting.
  • Must have access to an existing artists and collectors base and art industry network.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of art history, contemporary art and the art market.
  • Accurate organizational skills for the implementation of own projects.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Exceptional networking abilities and client management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential in English (Chinese is a plus).
  • Ability to perform under pressure, high flexibility and availability to travel.
