A long-established and highly respected independent auction house is seeking a Saleroom Manager to manage the saleroom and oversee the successful delivery of its monthly Interiors Sales . The successful candidate will take responsibility for the end-to-end management of the monthly Interiors auctions, overseeing every stage of the sale process from consignment through to post-sale collections. The role combines operational management, team leadership, client relationship management and commercial responsibility, ensuring sales are delivered efficiently, professionally and profitably.
Key responsibilities include managing sale schedules, coordinating consignment intake, cataloguing, photography and condition reporting, ensuring catalogues are produced accurately and on time, and overseeing the smooth running of auction days. The role also involves managing all saleroom operations, including goods receiving, storage, display, inventory control, collections and shipping, whilst maintaining high presentation standards and ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures.
The Saleroom Manager will lead and develop the saleroom team, planning staffing requirements for viewings, auction days and collections, while fostering a collaborative and customer-focused working environment. Building strong relationships with vendors and buyers will be a key aspect of the role, providing advice on consignments, estimates and auction procedures, resolving client queries and supporting business development activities to attract new consignments.
Commercially focused, the successful candidate will monitor sales performance, revenue and profitability, analysing key performance indicators and identifying opportunities to increase turnover, improve operational efficiency and contribute to marketing initiatives promoting upcoming sales.
Applicants should have previous experience within an auction house, fine art business, antiques trade or a related sector, together with proven experience managing auctions, saleroom operations or sales administration. A strong understanding of interiors, decorative arts, antiques and collectables is essential, along with excellent organisational skills, commercial awareness, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines. Previous experience supervising staff and strong client relationship skills are also required.
A degree or professional qualification in Fine Art, Art History, Decorative Arts, Business Management or a related discipline would be advantageous, as would membership of a recognised professional body and experience with online auction platforms.
