An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced Studio Manager to join the studio of an internationally recognised contemporary artist. This is a fascinating and highly varied role, overseeing both the commercial operations of a successful artist’s studio and a wide-ranging portfolio of philanthropic, educational and public art projects.
Based in a vibrant Central London studio, the successful candidate will work closely with the artist, acting as a trusted right-hand person while managing the day-to-day running of the studio and coordinating a wide network of freelancers, contractors and specialist advisers. This is a role for someone who enjoys variety, thrives on responsibility and is equally comfortable dealing with strategic projects and practical day-to-day operations.
The position would suit an organised, resourceful individual who is capable of working independently, managing competing priorities and maintaining absolute discretion and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing the day-to-day operations of a busy artist’s studio and office.
- Acting as the principal point of contact for clients, collectors, galleries, institutions and professional advisers.
- Supporting the artist with daily priorities, project management and administration.
- Coordinating the sale and placement of artworks into major international collections.
- Monitoring provenance and activity within the secondary art market, liaising with auction houses, galleries and collectors.
- Overseeing finance administration, including invoices, supplier payments, insurance, subscriptions and liaison with external bookkeepers.
- Managing studio facilities, equipment, contractors, technical staff and freelance specialists.
- Coordinating the production, transport and installation of major public sculpture commissions in the UK and internationally.
- Supporting the delivery of charitable initiatives, fundraising events and community art projects.
- Managing a substantial digital archive of artwork, photography and video assets.
- Working alongside legal advisers on intellectual property, licensing, trademarks and provenance matters.
- Assisting with press, marketing and public relations activities where required.
The Ideal Candidate
Applicants should have previous experience managing a professional artist’s studio or a similarly fast-paced creative environment. They will be confident working with high-profile stakeholders, possess excellent organisational skills and be capable of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Candidates are likely to demonstrate:
- Previous experience within a major artist’s studio or comparable creative organisation.
- Excellent project management and organisational skills.
- Strong administrative and financial management experience.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced IT skills, ideally including database management, Mac systems and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience of Artlogic or similar collections management software would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of artwork production, shipping, installation or public art projects would be highly desirable.
- An understanding of the contemporary art market, including galleries, collectors and auction houses.
- A proactive, adaptable approach with the ability to work independently and solve problems creatively.
- High levels of discretion, professionalism and attention to detail.
