Consignment Director  Manuscripts & Historical Documents

A leading international auction house specialising in high-value and culturally significant collectibles is seeking an experienced Consignment Director  for Manuscripts and Historical Documents to join its team. With a strong global presence and nearly five decades of leadership in the auction market, this organisation offers an exceptional platform for specialists passionate about rare and important historical documents and manuscripts.

The Role
This full-time position is responsible for acquiring high-quality  consignments for auction while helping to expand the category’s client base. The Consignment Director will generate and close leads, evaluate property for auction suitability, and contribute to marketing and sales strategies that drive growth within the Manuscripts & Historical Documents team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute strategies to expand the category

  • Source quality consignments from private collectors, estates, dealers, and institutions

  • Acquire consignments through internal resources and independently generated leads

  • Evaluate Historical Documents & Manuscripts  for condition, authenticity, provenance, and auction value

  • Negotiate consignment terms and maintain strong consignor relationships

  • Actively market auction lots to collectors and institutions and promote upcoming sales

  • Expand the client database by securing new consignors and bidders

  • Travel to meet clients and assess property for potential consignment

  • Participate in catalog production, including proofing text, images, and promotional materials

  • Support private treaty sales when required

Candidate Profile

  • Significant  experience in an auction house, commercial dealership, or major institution specialising in Manuscripts or Historical Documents

  • Demonstrated expertise in Manuscripts & Historical Documents

  • Proven success in business development and high-level client relationship management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Highly organised, self-motivated, and comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Strong customer service orientation with a positive, professional approach

Compensation

Negotiable commensurate with experience.
